About Tektite
Tektite, at tektite.ink, is a working colour reference: 348 original combinations and 159 historical colour names from Sanzo Wada’s A Dictionary of Color Combinations.
Sources & credits
Original work by Sanzo Wada. Site created by Lorre Huggan. Interface based on The Working Proof; Studio previews are illustrative application studies, not archival artwork.
This digital dataset follows Ben Elwyn’s dictionary, with colour data interpreted by Matt DesLauriers, originally compiled and open sourced by Dain M. Blodorn Kim.
Compact interface data uses IBM Plex Mono, copyright 2017 IBM Corp., self-hosted under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. General interface text uses system fonts; no remote font service is required. Seigensha Art is the publisher credited by the upstream book reference. No affiliation or endorsement is claimed.
The pinned data source is preserved, rather than silently corrected. Original combination numbers remain separate even when colours resemble one another. Swatch order follows source colour order, not independently verified archival plate order.
Published values, not historical originals
Digital sRGB approximations are not exact matches to printed swatches or pigments. HEX and RGB describe published screen values; CMYK and Lab retain the published source, not measurements made by this site. Upstream documents SWOP v2 CMYK to sRGB conversion and D50 Lab. Your display and print workflow affect the result.
The published Dull Violet Black CMYK magenta value is 106%; this source anomaly is preserved, not clamped. No historical application roles or proportions are recorded. Equal-width swatches and Studio studies are application choices, not Wada originals.
Colour families are broad HSL-based browsing groups, not historical classifications. Dictionary search matches names, original numbers and exact HEX values. The colour index separately labels approximate nearest colours, ranked by Euclidean distance in OKLab from published sRGB values. Contrast checks concern specific digital colour pairs, not an entire palette’s accessibility.
Rights & limitations
The reused dataset and upstream code contributions carry their respective MIT notices. Those notices do not automatically license historical books, scans, imagery, typography or other assets. No book scans or colour profiles are bundled.
Rights for this project’s own code, data distribution and assets remain subject to review; this page does not grant a blanket licence or establish rights to the historical originals. Check the applicable source notices and permissions before reuse or publication.
Your browser, not an account
Favourites, Studio drafts, saved studies and named collections are stored in this browser’s local storage, with no account or cloud sync. Clearing site data removes them; private browsing, storage restrictions and browser cleanup can make them unavailable. They do not automatically travel to another device or browser.
Collections can export a versioned JSON backup of all saved studies and named collections, including their exact recipes and memberships. Backups exclude the current Studio draft and favourites; add favourite originals to a named collection to include them. Import validates the entire backup before saving and adds independent copies without replacing existing work. Backups and stored Studio data are limited to 1 MiB, 200 saved studies, 100 collections and 2,000 memberships. Keep a downloaded backup somewhere safe before clearing site data.
Shared links can include combination selections, filters and Studio snapshot recipes. Snapshots include the source combination, edited colours, proportions, roles and preview, but not private study or collection names, notes or saved identities. A snapshot is an independent copy, not a synced project. URLs may appear in browser history or be visible to recipients and hosting infrastructure. Browser-local saves are not a backup, encryption or a guarantee of privacy on a shared device.
This app has no client analytics or telemetry. That does not make visits invisible: requests carry URLs to the host, and hosting or proxy logs may record paths, query strings and network metadata. A Studio snapshot is in the URL query, not encrypted. Hosting log retention and access need separate operator review; do not share a recipe you want to keep private.
If saves are missing or storage fails
First check that you are using the same browser profile and site address, outside private browsing. A different domain, protocol or port has separate storage. Allow site storage and try again; do not clear site data to fix an unreadable library. Invalid or unsupported saved data is left untouched rather than replaced. Free space elsewhere if storage is full.
If you have a Collections backup, import it in a compatible browser; imports add copies, so repeating an import creates duplicates. Save a wanted draft as a study before exporting a backup. A snapshot can recover only the recipe it contains, not your library. Once browser data is removed, this app has no server copy to restore; without a backup or recipe link, lost work cannot be recovered here.
Help & reporting a problem
No dedicated support contact or response time is published here. If you have a reporting channel from the person who provided this app, describe the area (Dictionary, Studio or Collections), browser and version, device, steps, expected result and exact error text. Reproduce with a made-up study name and a public original combination number if possible.
Do not send private backups, collection names, notes, browser-storage dumps or complete Studio snapshot URLs. Remove query strings from reported addresses and crop or redact screenshots. Keep any recovery copy on your own device; a support report should not need your personal library.
